TROY, N.Y. – The American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) and Rawlings have announced the 2022 Division III All-Region 3 Teams and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athlete
Chris Grome has been named to the Third Team.
A graduate student and left-handed pitcher from Framingham, Mass., Grome made 10 appearances for the Engineers this season, including eight starts. He went 5-2 with a 3.96 earned run average, giving up 27 runs (23 earned) on 44 hits over 52.1 innings. He struck out a team-high 59 batters, while walking 16 and allowed a .226 batting average to opposing hitters.
In six conference starts, Grome went 3-2 with a 3.49 ERA, surrendering 30 hits in 38.2 innings. The former Dexter Southfield School standout and All-Liberty League First Team selection struck out 37 and walked 11 with a .213 opponent average. For the season he allowed two or fewer runs in seven of his 10 appearances and struck out seven or more batters in five contests, including a career-high 13 punch outs in a win over Bard on April 2.
As a senior in 2021, Grome went 1-3 with a 7.31 earned run average. He struck out 11 batters in 16.0 innings as the Engineers went 6-8 in a COVID-19 shortened campaign.
A Ph.D. student in nuclear engineering and sciences, Grome garnered CoSIDA Academic All-District recognition. He has earned a Rensselaer Leadership Award and has been involved with Sigma Gamma Tau, an Aerospace Engineering Honor Society, as well as Sigma Chi Fraternity.
Grome has been a research assistant in the Sensing, Estimation, and Automation Laboratory on campus and the Nuclear Computing and Multiphysics (NuCoMP) Research Group. A summa cum laude aeronautical engineering undergraduate, he had internships with Collins Aerospace Hydro-Mechanical Systems, IMEG and Genzyme.
Grome finishes his RPI career with a 9-7 career record, with a 5.13 ERA. He struck out 133 batters over 126.1 innings and allowed a .261 opponent average.
RPI went 14-18 overall this season, including a 6-12 mark in Liberty League play.
