Aiden Drover-Mattinen opened the NCAA Championship with a 6-1, 6-4 victory and then earned All-America by winning his second round match as the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) sophomore advanced to the the national quarterfinals of the 2023 Division III Individual Singles Tournament.
He defeated Ramon Vilarroig Martinez, a junior from North Central College (Ill.), 6-1, 6-4 in the first round before taking down Abhi Ramireddy, a senior from Washington University of St. Louis, 7-6 (5), 6-4 in the Round of 16.
Drover-Mattinen, who competed in last year's tournament but lost in the Round of 16, plays Vishwa Aduru of Case Western Reserve, the No. 8 seed, on Friday at 11am. Aduru, a junior, defeated Gustavus Adolphus' Nick Aney in the first round, 6-3, 6-2, and then earned a 6-0, 4-6, 7-5 win over Sewanee's Jordan Theron in the second round, coming from behind after trailing 4-2 in the third set.
The winner advances to the national semifinals on Saturday.
