ORLANDO, Fla. - In a match that saw both student-athletes put up streaks, Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) junior Vishwa Aduru prevailed over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) sophomore
Aiden Drover-Mattinen 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Men's Tennis Championship at the USTA National Campus. Aduru advances to Saturday's semifinals, while Drover-Mattinen, who earned All-America based on victories in the first two rounds, is eliminated.
The first set saw Aduru, the No. 8 seed who helped CWRU to the 2023 NCAA Championship, jump out to a 5-0 lead. Drover-Mattinen pulled to within 5-3, including winning the seventh set at love, but Aduru closed it out with an ace.
Drover-Mattinen lost the first game of the second set but rebounded to win the next four before dropping the sixth at love. Aduru went on to win the next three games to go ahead 5-4 and the two players alternated wins to force a tiebreak. Drover-Mattinen fell behind 1-0 but won the next two points and four of the next six to lead 4-3 but Aduru rattled off four straight to win the set and match.
In 37 singles matches in 2022-23, Drover-Mattinen had a 29-8 record, including 16-3 in tournaments and 13-5 in dual matches all at No. 1.
