MADISON, N.J. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's tennis team has shined at the 2023 ITA Division III Northeast Regional, as the Engineers have multiple players still alive ahead of championship play on Sunday and Monday. The event is hosted by Drew University.
Okada Tsubasa and
Andy Zhu each continue to push ahead for the Engineers, each securing a spot in the regional quarterfinals after three wins three wins between Friday and Saturday. In doubles, Zhu paired with Aidan Drover-Mattinen made their way to the regional semifinals.
After winning his first two matches by finals of 8-0 and 8-5, Tsubasa came back to win his Round of 16 match 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 over Juan Mendoza. Zhu took a pair of 8-2 wins to the round of 16, where we was able to top Ayush Kishore of The College of New Jersey by a final of 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 to advance.
Despite losing the doubles pairing of Tsubi Okaka and
Max Safanov in the quarterfinal round, Drover-Mattinen and Zhu sailed through doubles play, collecting an 8-0 and pair of 8-2 wins to advance to Sunday's semifinals.
In other play for RPI,
Bryce Burnham collected two wins in singles play, making his way to the Round of 16 by a final score of 8-4 over Franisco Aran of Junita College. However, Burnham dropped his Round of 16 match in a closely contested 6-2, 7-5 final against Rumaish Khasgir of NYU.
Tasmay Shah won first round matchup 8-6 over Vassar's Eugene Lee before falling in the second round.
Tsubasa and Zhu will compete in Sunday's singles matches, while Drover-Mattinen and Zhu will compete in doubles play for runs at regional championships.
