SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.- The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) golf team finished tied for seventh out of 21 teams at the Skidmore Invitational. The Engineers shot a 22-over par 310 in their single round at the Saratoga Spa Golf Club, with the windy and rainy conditions causing the second round of play to be canceled on Sunday.
Co-Captain
Matt Buckley and
Owen Himmer, led the way for the Engineers with matching scores of four-over par 76. The pair finished tied for 15th place and only five shots back of the lead.
Buckley, starting on the eighth hole, started out slowly with bogeys on 11 and 15 and a double on 12 to go four over after eight holes, but regained his steady play to go even par the rest of the way. With his round today, Buckley passed former RPI golfer and previous head coach, Jamie Jackson (2011-2015), to become the all-time RPI Golf program leader in rounds played with 73.
Himmer continued his excellent play this year for the Engineers. Starting on the seventh hole, he had birdies on holes 12, 16, 18 and 4, offset by six bogeys and one double bogey.
Anthony Chen and Co-Captain Graduate student
Jacob Lindsay both shot nine-over par 79 to finish the scoring for the Engineers. Junior
Ryan Komp finished with a 10-over par 82.
The Engineers fielded a second team at this tournament, providing valuable experience for the second five on the roster. The second team was led by
Andrew Peterson (78) and Kamran Duenwald (79). Patrick Kiernan (81) and
Alex Weller (86) rounded out the scoring for the second team.
Nick Ventura shot 88 to help the squad team claim 15th place in the overall team standings.
Coach
Matt McGarvey commented on the team and individual efforts: "The wind was a factor today and the greens were all very firm. Matt and Owen continued the steady play that they have shown all season."
The final round of play scheduled for Sunday, October 13 was canceled due to weather.
RPI will wrap the fall season on October 28 and 29 at the O'Briant Jensen Invitational hosted by Guilford College.
