No. 29 Men’s Tennis Upends No. 21 MIT

Engineers Remain Perfect With Weekend Sweep

Box Score LATHAM, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's tennis team collected their second win over a ranked opponent to being their 2024 spring season, as the No. 29 Engineers defeated No. 21 MIT on Sunday by a final score of 5-4.
 
The Engineers took control of the match in doubles to open the match, as the top group of Aidan Drover-Mattinen and Andy Zhu took an 8-1 victory. Joel McCandless and Tsubi Okada also took a win from the No. 2 doubles spot, taking an 8-4 win. After dropping the third matchup, RPI took a key 2-1 lead heading into doubles play.
 
Drover-Mattinen, Zsu, and Okada held the top three spots in the lineup for singles play, and each collected wins to give RPI their five points to win the match. Drover-Mattinen dropped the first set of his match in a tiebreak, 7-6 before coming back with 6-3, 6-0 victories to clinch the matchup.
 
Zhu won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2 while Okada won a three-set thriller 6-2, 3-6, 6-0 at the No. 3 lineup spot.
 
RPI returns to action on Friday, Feb. 23 at 1 p.m. when they take on The College of New Jersey at Tri-City Fitness in Latham.
