CLINTON, NY- The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's track & field team began it's 2024 outdoor season today at the Hamilton Outdoor Invitational.
The Engineers collected three individual victories and a relay win on the day, with
Cortez Garrett highlighting the afternoon with first place finishes in the 110-meter and 400-meter hurdles. Garrett posted winning times of 15.26 and 57.17 seconds, respectively, in the two events.
Tristan Mangin had a strong day for the Engineers in the field, as he finished first in the javelin (54.43 meters), second in the discus (40.31m), and seventh in the shot put (13.11m).
A trio of Engineers scored points in the 100m dash, with
Donovan Myrick leading RPI with a third place result (10.87 seconds).
Josh Ihegihu (11.00 seconds) and
Ronen Stewart (11.07 seconds) were a step behind Myrick in fifth and sixth place, respectively.
Stewart, Ihegihu, and
Alexander Flynn performed well in the 200m, as Stewart took fifth (22.30 seconds) and Ihegihu and Flynn tied for seventh with a matching time of 22.35 seconds.
Flynn was also the runner-up in the 400m, as he crossed second in 50.55 seconds.
Peter Cavanaugh made the 400m podium as well with a third place result (50.95 seconds).
Drew Kerr was ninth in 53.02 seconds.
Jack Gips joined Garrett on the 400m hurdle leaderboard, as Gips finished seventh with a time of 1:01.98.
Joey Hinckley (4.30m),
Joshua Chait (3.85m), and
Dillen Owusu (3.70m) respectively finished second, fourth, and fifth in the pole vault.
Owen Haas (6.38m) claimed fifth while
Robert Smith (6.26m) earned ninth in the long jump.
Ngawang Ghongwatsang and Smith were on the board in the triple jump, with Ghongwatsang (12.28m) finishing sixth and Smith (12.21m) recorded an eighth place finish.
Ghongwatsang scored points again with a fourth place finish in the javelin (44.15m).
Javier Bedoya was fifth in the discus (38.41m) and
Colby Grove was eighth in the hammer throw (39.75m) to round out the field scoring for the Engineers.
Myrick, Flynn, Ihegihu, and
Max Liu provided RPI with the relay victory in the 4 x 100 shootout, with the group teaming to win in 41.66 seconds.
Looking forward, the Engineers are set to compete again on Saturday, April 6 at the Amherst Spring Fling.
