LEWISBURG, PA- Co-Captain Matt Buckley of The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) golf team finished runner-up at The Gauntlet at the Bucknell Golf Course. Buckley posted nine birdies and an eagle in his two rounds to finish three-under par across the two-day tournament.
The RPI squad improved three shots and moved up three places to claim third overall out of 14 teams in the season-opening tournament. The Engineers' 288 second-round scorecard is a top-10 single-round performance all-time and their two-day total of 587 is second best score all-time for the Engineers golf program.
Co-Captain Jacob Lindsay matched Buckley with one-under par 69 in the final day of action. Lindsay started the day on hole six with a birdie and also birdied holes nine and four as he made his way around the 6,235-yard, par 70 course.
Buckley, starting on hole four, registered birdies on six, seven, and nine to take the lead late in the second round. Buckley led the tournament until a double-bogey on the par three hole 16. He suffered another bogey on the 209-yard par-three second hole before a dramatic eagle on the 596-yard par-five fifth hole that finished his round by catapulting him back up the leaderboard into second place.
The dramatic finish was a little too late, however, as Collin McMahon-Shea birdied three of his last five holes to sneak past Buckley and win the tournament by two shots.
Buckley and Lindsay, both grad students, now co-own the RPI golf career record for rounds in the 60's with seven apiece. Buckley's two-day scorecard of 68 and 69 is the first time in program history that an RPI golfer shot in the 60's in both rounds of a 36-hole tournament.
Owen Himmer shot five-over 75 on a day when almost all scores went up. Himmer's two-day total of 145 is his career best. Anthony Chen also shot five-over 75 and his two-day total of 149 and T-28 finish were also career-bests for him.
Coach Matt McGarvey summed up the tournament: "I am very proud of our team for meeting the challenge of a new tournament with a strong field head on. Kudos to the young men from Gettysburg for an excellent round today. We will take the positives from this tournament and bring them to Taconic next weekend."
The Engineers head to Williamstown, Massachusetts September 21-22 to compete in the Williams College Invitational Tournament at the legendary Taconic Golf Course, which was recently named the second best college course in the Northeast United States.
