ALTOONA, PA- Owen Himmer of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) golf team shot a career-low two-under par 69 in the first round of the Northeast Elite at the par 71, 6516 -yard Williamsport Country Club.
Himmer birdied holes one, four, fourteen and eighteen to offset bogeys at holes seven and fifteen. Himmer previously shot career-lows of 71 for a single round and 146 for a two-round total at the season opener two weeks ago at The Gauntlet at Bucknell Golf Club.
Co-Captain and returning Honorable Mention All-American Matt Buckley joined Himmer at two-under 69. Buckley birdied holes one, thirteen, sixteen, eighteen and eagled hole six, with three bogeys and one double bogey. Buckley and Himmer are RPI Golf's two 2020 recruits, who helped the Engineers to their first conference championship and NCAA Championship appearance in 2021.
Ryan Komp tied his career low of 73 and Co-Captain Jacob Lindsay shot a four-over 75 to round out the scoring for the Engineers. Their team score of a 286 is the second best in program history.
Coach Matt McGarvey on his team's performance today: "Our team performed admirably in the wet conditions on this very challenging golf course. The course showed its teeth, especially on the front nine. Then, our guys displayed their resiliency with 9 birdies as a team on the back and with 3 players (Matt, Owen, and Ryan, each shooting one under par – 34. We are excited to get back out there tomorrow for the final round where we will be paired with some very strong teams."
Williamsport Country Club is a par-71 6516-yard track, was designed by famous American golf architect, A.W. Tillinghast, in 1909. Williamsport's back nine was added in 1923.
The Engineers will begin play in the final round tomorrow at 12:30 pm.
