Komp Finishes First After Record-Setting Second Round, Engineers Take Team Title at Farmingdale

FARMINGDALE, NY - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) golf finished in first place at the Farmingdale Spring invitational at Bethpage Red Course on Long Island. Highlighting the team win was Ryan Komp, whose program record-tying single round of 66 helped the RPI Engineers came back from five shots down and win the team title.

Komp went on a birdie binge, starting at Hole 8 and birdieing holes 8. 9, 11, 14, and 16 to move up 26 spots and take the individual title. The team beat 8th ranked Huntingdon, 18th ranked Babson, and 26th ranked Rochester.

Co-Captain and Byron Nelson Award Finalist Matt Buckley sank the decisive putt for the  Engineers, playing in the last group.  Buckley bogeyed the par four second, birdied the par three fourth and bogeyed the Par Four tenth, but played even par the rest of the way to anchor the team victory.  Individually, he finished tied for fifth place

Owen Himmer overcame an opening double bogey and some less-than-optimal shot making to finish plus two 72 and finish tied for 13th.

Co-Captain Jacob Lindsay, followed an opening round 75 with a two-over par 72.  Lindsay bogeyed two and eight on the front side and matched a birdie on 13.

Anthony Chen rounded out the scoring with a plus nine 79.

The Engineers are back in action next week at the Liberty League Championship Tournament Friday through Sunday.  With a spot in the Division III National Championship on the line, Liberty League foes will compete at the Shenandoah Course at Turning Stone Resort in Verona, New York.
