Box Score TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's tennis team defeated St. Lawrence 6-1 today inside TriCity Rentals.
The Engineers opened the match with a solid showing in doubles competition, securing the point by winning two of the three matches. At the top position,
Tasmay Shah and
Tsubasa Okada set the tone early with a convincing 6-2 victory, giving RPI momentum heading into the rest of the doubles lineup. The Engineers added another win at the No. 2 position as
Gustave Viennet and
Debarshi Sen combined for a 6-3 decision to clinch the doubles point for RPI. The pairing of
Aiden Atri and
Felix Puyplat battled at No. 3 doubles before falling by a 6-4 score.
RPI carried that momentum into singles play, winning five of the six matches to seal the team victory. Competing at the top of the lineup, Shah delivered a strong performance, winning the opening set 6-2 before battling through a tight second set and ultimately securing the match 7-6.
At No. 2 singles, Okada produced another dominant outing, earning a 6-2, 6-2 victory to extend the Engineers' advantage. Viennet followed with a steady performance at the third position, defeating his opponent 6-3, 6-3 to add another point for RPI.
The Engineers continued their success in the middle of the lineup as Puyplat controlled his match at No. 4 singles, posting a 6-2, 6-3 win. Sen capped RPI's singles victories at the sixth position with a decisive 6-2, 6-2 result.
The most competitive singles contest of the day came at the fifth position, where Atri battled through a three-set match. After dropping the opening set 6-2, Atri responded with a 6-3 second-set victory before narrowly falling in the deciding set 7-5.
RPI next travels to Brandeis for a non-conference tilt on Sunday, March 22.
