CANTON, N.Y. - The St. Lawrence University field hockey team celebrated its annual “Senior Day” by holding off 17th-ranked Rensselaer, 1-0, to remain atop the Liberty League standings. St.
Lawrence (7-4 overall; 4-1 Liberty League) now controls its own destiny and has the inside track to hosting the conference tournament.

After earning its first penalty corner of the game, St. Lawrence capitalized when junior co-captain Jennifer Stetson fired a low, bouncing shot past RPI freshman goaltender Briana Earle (Baldwinsville, NY/C. W. Baker). Steton's fifth goal of the season came at 11:31 and was assisted by senior Michelle Verrochi.

The Red Hawks (8-4; 3-2), who entered Saturday's game in a three-way tie with St. Lawrence and Skidmore for first place in the Liberty League, got their best scoring chance when a loose ball found sophomore Sandy Turnbull (Upperville, VA/Chatham Hall) at the top of the crease, but her shot was kicked away and out of bounds by the goaltender.  The stop was one of three first half saves for SLU senior keeper Emilie Lannamann.

Needing a goal to even the score, Rensselaer tried several times to get the ball in traffic in front of Lannamann throughout the second half. However, rookie defenseman Dylan Cutler was impressive in front of her goalie, as she broke up several dangerous centering passes to help protect her team's lead.
The Saints finished with a 15-3 advantage in penalty corners and a 23-7 edge in shots. Earle made nine saves, while Lannamann made four stops to pick up her second consecutive shutout.

“I thought we came in with tremendous focus and energy today against one of the top teams in our league,” said St. Lawrence head coach Fran Grembowicz.
