TROY, N.Y. – Senior
Kristiina Baker (Bolton, MA/Nashoba Regional) recorded two goals and an assist in leading the Rensselaer field hockey team to a 6-1 win over Wheaton College, this afternoon at Harkness Field. The Red Hawks complete their non-league schedule with a 5-2 overall mark, while the Lyons fall to 4-4.
The Red Hawks got the scoring started off of a penalty corner 1:48 in the game. Senior forward
Lisa Pak (Methuen, MA/Methuen) ripped a shot from the top of the scoring arc past Wheaton netminder Andrea Bagley (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro) for a 1-0 lead. Junior
Margaret Chowaniec (Burlington, CT/Lewis Mills) stopped the ball at the edge of the arc for Pak to pick up the assist.
Five minutes later it was Baker picking up the assist on a
Sandy Turnbull (Upperville, VA/Chatham Hill) tally to give Rensselaer a 2-0 advantage. Baker worked to win the ball on the right side of the net and fed it across the goal mouth to Turnbull for the finish.
Baker put the host Red Hawks up 3-0 at 11:58 of the first half. Carrying the ball in from the left flank, she stick handled past Bagley and scored her third goal of the season.
Rensselaer took a 9-3 shots edge into halftime, and finished with a 20-18 advantage.
In the second half, the Red Hawks scored three more times, less than six minutes apart to expand their lead to 6-0. Sophomore
Jessica Corrigan (South Burlington, VT/Northfield Mount Hermon), Baker and Pak each had second half markers with junior
Megan McNamara (Johnstown, NY/Johnstown) picking up an assist on Baker's second tally of the day.
The Lyons found the score sheet as time expired to breakup the shutout. Junior Alex Block (Saratoga, CA/Saratoga) battled for her own rebound in front the RPI net and beat Red Hawks' freshman goaltender
Briana Earle (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) to the near side.
Earle made eight saves, while improving to 4-2 on the season. Bagley, whose records runs to 4-4, also had eight stops.
The Red Hawks open Liberty League play next weekend when they host Rochester and nationally-ranked William Smith on Friday (4pm) and Saturday (2pm), respectively. The Lyons visit Mount Holyoke next Saturday (1pm) to begin their NEWMAC schedule.
