LAKELAND, Fla. – Bethany scored six runs on three 2-out hits and the Vikings went on to defeat Rensselaer, 7-4. Bethany improves to 8-3, while the Red Hawks fall to 1-4 on the young season.
RPI scored single runs in each of the first two innings for a 2-0 lead, including a run-scoring double by
Scott Robinson (Schenectady, NY/Mohonasen), but the Vikings came back with two runs in their half of the third on a two-out single to center by Justin Schwecke (Buffalo Lake, MN/Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop). Bethany added two more runs in the fourth on a two-out hit to center by Trent Sonnicksen (Blue Earth, MN/Blue Earth Area) for a 4-3 lead.
The Vikings went up 6-3 in the sixth with their third two-out, two-run single, this time off the bat of Steve Hoostal (Burnsville, MN/Burnsville). Schwecke opened the seventh with a triple literally off the top of the centerfield fence and scored on an infield out.
Junior Nick Johnson (Indianapolis, IN/Lawrence North) went six strong innings to earn the win in his first collegiate start, scattering five hits with six strikeouts against three earned runs scored.

In Rensselaer's game on Tuesday against St. Joseph's College of NY, the Red Hawks allowed just four earned runs but lost, 17-11, in a game that lasted 4:20. Among RPI's top performers was
