TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer baseball team pounded out 38 hits in defeating St. Lawrence University 7-1 and 25-2 in a Liberty League doubleheader at Robison Field. With the victories, the Red Hawks win their seventh straight game and improve to 8-4 overall (4-0 Liberty). The Saints move to 4-7 (0-4 Liberty).
In game one, Rensselaer received two-run home runs from junior
Andrew Krushelnyski (Bloomfield Hills, MI) and sophomore
Mike Cieszko (Stevenson Ranch, CA) in the first and second innings, respectively, to take a 4-0 lead after two.
After the Saints got a run on an RBI-single by freshman shortstop Bryan Brennan (Randolph, NJ) in the bottom of the third, the Red Hawks answered with two in top of the fifth. Sophomore Nick Marchese (Tampa, FL) delivered a run scoring groundout, before junior
Camden Mamigonian (Dover, NH) drove home a run with a sacrifice fly.
Junior starting pitcher
John Dreimiller (Ticonderoga, NY) was sharp on the mound, earning the victory after allowing just one run on four hits over 6.0 innings of work. He struck out eight and walked two. Saints starter Sean Voss (Lockport, NY) surrendered seven runs on 13 hits.
Krushelnyski finished the game 3 for 4 with a double, a home run and two runs batted in. Cieszko went 2 for 3 with a homer and two RBIs. Brennan was 1 for 3 with a walk and an RBI for St. Lawrence.
Game two saw Rensselaer score 25 runs on 25 hits. 12 different players recorded at least one hit, including seven who had multiple base knocks. The Red Hawks opened the game up in the 3rd inning, scoring 13 times – nine of which coming with two outs.
Marchese and junior second baseman
Scott Robinson (Schenectady, NY) each hit home runs in the inning, which saw 14 batters come to the plate. RPI added two runs in the 5th, one in the 7th, four in the 8th and two in the 9th. St. Lawrence plated single runs in the 5th and 6th.
Senior third baseman
Jim Devine (Castleton, NY) finished the game 5 for 7 with three runs and six RBIs. Sophomore shortstop
Tom Jebb (Ticonderoga, NY) went 3 for 6 with two doubles, three runs and three RBIs. Robinson was 2 for 3 with two runs and three runs batted in.
Rensselaer starter
Andrew Novick (Hopewell Junction, NY) went 6.0 innings, allowing two runs on nine hits, with five strikeouts and three walks. Sophomore
Dan Carey (Troy, NY) and freshman
Dan Duval combined to pitch 3.0 innings of scoreless relief, with three strikeouts.
The Red Hawks return to action on Wednesday, when they host Castleton State (4pm). They welcome Western New England College to Robison Field on Thursday (4pm).
