TROY, N.Y. – Junior
Noah Poissant had a walk-off single to right field in the 11th inning to give the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team a 7-6 victory over Vassar College in the first game of a Liberty League doubleheader. The Red Hawks completed the sweep with a 10-4 win in the nightcap to increase their winning streak to 13 games.
In the opener, which was scheduled for seven innings, Rensselaer (14-4; 8-0 Liberty League) scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to erase a one-run deficit and force extra innings. The Red Hawks won the game four innings later when Poissant (Cohoes, NY/Cohoes) drove a 3-2 pitch to right field with runners on second and third and one out. Junior
Patrick Reardon (Troy, NY/LaSalle Institute) scored the winning run after drawing a walk, moving to second on a single, advancing to third base on a wild pitch and scoring on Poissant's base hit.
The homestanding Red Hawks led 3-0 after two innings and 5-2 after five before Vassar (2-12; 1-7) scored four runs on five hits in the sixth for a 6-5 lead. RPI knotted the score when Reardon crossed the plate on an error in the top of the seventh inning.
Rensselaer's top four hitters each had multiple hits, including Reardon, who was 3 for 4 with two doubles, four runs scored and an RBI. The Red Hawks, who saw
Ryan Washburn (Gansevoort, NY/Schuylerville) earn the win in relief, collected 15 hits as a team.
Vassar had 16 hits, led by freshman designated hitter Liam Lee (East Hampton, NY/East Hampton), who was 4 for 5 with a double and a run. Freshman Zachary Prudoff (St. Croix, VI/St. Croix Country Day) took the loss, allowing just one run in 3.1 innings.
In the nightcap, RPI junior first baseman
Andrew Krushelnyski (Bloomfield Hills, MI/Brother Rice) went 4 for 4 with a double, two runs and four RBI as Rensselaer posted the 10-4 win. Senior
Andrew Novick (Hopewell Junction, NY/John Jay) allowed just two earned runs and five hits in 5.0 innings for the victory.
RPI took control of the second game early, scoring three runs in the first inning and four in the second for a 7-1 lead. The Brewers pulled to within 7-3 with a three-run fifth inning but RPI scored two more times for the final margin.
Vassar got all eight of its hits from four different players, including freshman centerfielder Joseph Coniglio (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood), who had two hits two runs and two stolen bases. Senior Tyler Bellstrom (Townshend, VT/Leland & Gray Union) took the loss on the mound.
Rensselaer returns to action on Wednesday in a non-league game at William Paterson (4pm). Vassar hosts Albertus Magnus in a doubleheader on Friday beginning at 2pm.
