AUBURNDALE, Fla. - Rensselaer pounded out 17 hits and scored in six of nine innings in its season opener and the Red Hawks defeated St. John Fisher College, 17-9.  Junior Ryan Washburn (Gansevoort, NY/Schuylerville) struck out five batters - RPI pitchers struck out 13 on the day - in 2.1 innings of relief to earn the win.

Offensively, senior centerfielder Sean Wilkes (Troy, NY/Catholic Central) had three hits, including two doubles, with three runs batted in and three scored and sophomore third baseman Mike Cieszko (Stevenson Ranch, CA/William S. Hart) had two hits, including a three-run double, with four RBI and a run scored.

Also contributing at the plate for RPI was Jim Devine (Castleton, NY/Columbia) and Patrick Reardon (Troy, NY/LaSalle Institute), who had two hits apiece.  Reardon also had a run batted in.
