WAYNE, N.J. – Rensselaer used an eight-run outburst in the fifth inning to thwart a William Paterson comeback and the Red Hawks went on to defeat the Pioneers, 13-5, in six innings.  The game was ended prematurely due to a cold and steady rain.

The Red Hawks, who have now won 14 straight games to improve to 15-4, struck immediately, when with two runners on base and two outs in the top of the first inning, junior leftfielder Camden Mamigonian (Dover, NH/Dover) doubled in both men for a 2-0 edge.

Mike Cieszko (Stevenson Ranch, CA/William S. Hart) homered to left field to lead off the second inning, and later an error and an Andrew Krushelnyski (Bloomfield Hills, MI/Brother Ride) fielder's choice allowed two more players to cross home plate, making it a 5-0 Red Hawk edge.

The Pioneers (10-9) fought back, closing to within a run with a four-run fourth inning. With the bases loaded and no outs, senior Will Courter (Roseland, NJ/West Essex) trotted home on a wild pitch, followed by a walk to classmate John Elia (Emerson, NJ/Pascack Valley) to again load the bases. A flyout was followed by a Ryan VanderMay (West Caldwell, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) RBI groundout, and junior Marc Palestina (Paramus, NJ/Paramus) singled in Elia and Mike Moran (Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock Twp.) with a base hit through the left side of the infield, making it a 5-4 game.

Eleven hitters combined to produce five hits and five walks for a total of eight RPI runs during the top of the fifth inning. Junior Patrick Reardon (Troy, NY/LaSalle Institute) drove in two runs with a double down the rightfield line, and Cieszko, Noah Poissant (Cohoes, NY/Cohoes), Tom Jebb (Ticonderoga, NY/Ticonderoga), Sean Wilkes (Troy, NY/Catholic Central), and Nic Marchese (Tampa, FL/Chamberlain) all accounted for RBI during the inning.

Cieszko was 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored. Mamigonian went 2-for-3 while driving in two scores, and Marchese was 2-for-3 as well.

For the Pioneers, Palestina led the offense with a 2-for-3 effort while posting two runs-batted-in.

Andrew Mondo (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) improved to 4-1 with 2.0 innings on the mound, allowing just one hit.

Freshman Rob Doughty (Jersey City, NJ/Hudson Catholic) fell to 1-1 for the Pioneers, giving up five runs (four earned) on five hits in 2.0 innings.
