ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Junior righthander Andrew Mondo allowed just two earned runs in 8.0 innings and the Rensselaer baseball team scored five runs in the ninth inning to break open the second game of a Liberty League doubleheader at Rochester, 11-5. The victory gave the Red Hawks, the #10 team in the nation, a split with the #17 Yellowjackets, who won the first game, 4-0.

Mondo (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) allowed nine hits and five runs with two walks and five strikeouts in improving to 6-1 on the season. Offensively for RPI (19-5 overall; 12-1 Liberty League) in the nightcap, sophomore Nic Marchese (Tampa, FL/Chamberlain) had three hits, including a double and a triple, with two runs and four RBI. Senior Sean Wilkes (Troy, NY/Catholic Central) also had three hits with three runs and a run batted in and junior Camden Mamigonian (Dover, NH/Dover) added a home run.

Rochester (19-6; 11-3) took a 1-0 lead in the third inning of game two but RPI came right back to tie the score on Mamigonian's solo home run to left field in the fourth inning. The Yellowjackets regained the lead, 4-3, with two unearned runs in the fifth inning but the visitors scored three runs in the sixth, highlighted by Marchese's triple.

Rensselaer's lead was short-lived as Rochester got the run back in its half of the inning and then re-gained the lead, 5-4, with a single run in the seventh inning. The Red Hawks put together a two-run eighth inning, including an RBI single by Marchese, before scoring five times on five hits in the ninth inning for the final margin.

Nick Cacciola took the loss for Rochester as he gave up two runs on two hits in 1.0 inning.

In the first game, which ended a 17-game RPI winning streak, two Yellowjackets pitchers combined to hold the Red Hawks to just four singles. Starter Dan Ludwig pitched 4.2 innings before giving way to Luke Brocks, who pitched the final 2.1 innings for the save.

Rochester got two runs in the first inning, one in the third and one in the sixth to capture the seven inning contest and pull within one game of first place Rensselaer in the league standings. Andy Cannon and Matt Francis had two hits apiece.

For RPI, Mamigonian had two hits and Andrew Novick (Hopewell Junction, NY/John Jay) allowed three earned runs in the loss.

The same two teams face off on Sunday afternoon for another doubleheader beginning at noon in Rochester.
