Mondo improves to 9-1 with victory at St. Joseph's

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. - Junior righthander Andrew Mondo allowed just one run on four hits with six strikeouts and Andrew Novick and Mike Cieszko provided solid relief to lead Rensselaer to a 5-1 non-league win at St. Joseph's of Long Island.  RPI, the 17th-ranked team in the nation, improves to 27-8.  St. Joseph's is now 18-15.

Mondo (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) improved to 9-1 on the season by giving up only four singles and two walks with six strikeouts in 6.0 innings.  He has won nine straight games.  Novick (Hopewell Junction, NY/John Jay), a senior, pitched the seventh and eighth innings, allowing just two hits, and Cieszko (Stevenson Ranch, CA/William S. Hart) struck out two in a perfect ninth inning to close out the victory.

Offensively, RPI got two hits from senior Sean Wilkes (Troy, NY/Catholic Central), sophomore Josh Brooks (Lake Katrine, NY/Kingston) and Noah Poissant (Cohoes, NY/Cohoes).  Wilkes had a single and a triple with two runs scored, Brooks added a run, an RBI and a stolen base, and Poissant knocked out a double while scoring once and driving in once.

Mark Cisek (Sayville, NY/Sayville) was 2 for 3 for the home team, which saw freshman Jason Dierkes (Mt. Sinai, NY/Mt. Sinai) suffer the loss.
