Potsdam, N.Y. - Junior righthander
Andrew Mondo struck out nine and walked two in a complete game victory, 3-0 over Clarkson in a Liberty League contest. With the win the Red Hawks improve to 16-4 overall, including 15 straight wins, and 9-0 in the league. The Golden Knights lost for the first time in six games to fall to 9-8 and 5-2.
Rensselaer manufactured a run in the top of the first inning when senior centerfield
Sean Wilkes came home on a sacrifice fly after RPI started the frame with a pair of groundball singles. Andrew Krushelynski drove in the run with his one-out fly out to centerfield.
The next inning, RPI picked up another run on a solo home run from
Mike Cieszko that cleared the leftfield fence. From there, Clarkson's David Goerold settled in and induced numerous groundball outs.
Mondo mowed through the Clarkson lineup, allowing back-to-back hits in the second inning, but a double play and a strike out allowed him to wiggle out of the jam and the Knights were unable to muster another hit until the eighth inning.
By that point, RPI had picked up another run on an RBI single from
Scott Robinson in the sixth inning, finally chasing Goerold.
Wilkes went 3-for-5 to lead RPI, while
Patrick Reardon and
Jim Devine each had two hits for the Red Hawks.
