REGULAR SEASON OPENER: The Engineers open the 2009 season — their 123rd — with a non-league game against Endicott College at East Campus Stadium ... Kickoff is 1pm.
EAST CAMPUS DEBUT: Rensselaer christens its new stadium, a 5,200 field turf facility, against the Gulls ... The East Campus Athletic Village (ECAV) – the most extensive athletic construction project in school history – will dramatically improve campus athletic facilities, expand athletic opportunities and enhance the overall student experience at Rensselaer.
ECAV FEATURES: Among the many amenities of the East Campus Athletic Village is a lighted turf field with seating for 5,200 fans, dedicated home locker rooms for 10 teams, a 4,800-square foot strength & conditioning center, a state-of-the-art athletic training suite and a jumbotron.
TWO AT HOME: RPI plays its first two games at home ... The Engineers welcome Utica for a non-league game next Saturday, September 19 ... Kickoff is 1pm.
BROADCAST INFO: Saturday's game — and all RPI games — will be broadcast live on the radio on WRPI, 91.5 FM, and on the Internet at
www.wrpi.org ... All home games will be shown live on demand on B2 Networks in conjunction with RPI TV.
RPI VS. ENDICOTT ALL-TIME: RPI is 5-0 all-time against the Gulls ... All five wins have come in the last five seasons, including a 36-7 win in Beverly, Massachusetts, a season ago.
IN TROY: The Engineers are 2-0 against Endicott in Troy ... They defeated the Gulls by 34-7 and 34-10 scores in 2005 and 2007, respectively.
SEVEN AGAINST: RPI has allowed Endicott seven points in four of the five all-time meetings ... Rensselaer gave up 10 points in 2007.
LEADING THE ENGINEERS: RPI features four captains this season ... They are all seniors: defensive backs
Tim Acker and
Joe Albano, wide receiver
Mike Fil and offensive lineman

FIRST YEAR: Each of RPI's four captains are in their first years in that role.
PRE-SEASON HONOR: Rensselaer kicker
Peter Nilson was named to the the inaugural Fred Mitchell Outstanding Placekicker Award Watch List ... The senior from Appleton, Wis., is one of 18 Division II or III placekickers listed ... The award is presented for excellence on the football field and in the community.
PRE-SEASON RANKING: The Engineers are ranked 22nd nationally in the 2009 Lindy's Sports Annuals Division III Pre-Season Top 25.
NEW D-COORDINATOR: Blaise Zambrano has been elevated to defensive coordinator ... He was promoted after spending last season working with the defensive backs ... He replaces Chad Martinovich, who was hired as the head coach at MIT. Zambrano, who is in his third year at Rensselaer, also coached the linebackers for a season.
IN RECENT OPENERS: The Engineers are riding an eight-game winning streak in season openers ... They are 10-1 in their last 11 to start the season.
RPI TWO-DEEP: The 44 student-athletes on Rensselaer's two-deep are made up of 14 seniors, 16 juniors, nine sophomores and five freshmen ... Offensively, there are four seniors, nine juniors, five sophomores and four freshmen ... The defense features 10 seniors, seven juniors, four sophomores and a freshman.
WHAT YEAR?: RPI's roster is made up of 21 seniors, 23 juniors, 32 sophomores and 46 freshmen.
FROM WHERE?: The Engineers features student-athletes from 18 different states, led by New York (60), followed by Massachusetts (13), New Jersey (12) and Florida (9).
CLASS OF 2009: RPI's senior class from last year posted a four-year record of 31-9 ... That group played in the post-season all four years and won three ECAC Championships.
POST-SEASON: Rensselaer has played in the post-season in eight of the past 10 seasons ... In that span the Engineers have played in four NCAA Tournaments and four ECAC Championship Games.
ENDICOTT LAST WEEK: The Gulls opened their season a week ago, defeating Framingham State, 26-15, by forcing nine turnovers, including seven interceptions ... Quarterback Phil Konopka ended the evening 14 of 26 for 136 yards and two touchdowns ... Colby Hawkins ran 15 times for 95 yards with a score ... Linebacker Kevin Eagan led the way with a game-high 13 total tackles (8 solos).
RPI VS. ENDICOTT IN 2008: Sophomore running back
Nick Costa rushed for 97 yards and three touchdowns in a 36-7 non-conference game at Endicott Stadium ... Senior quarterback
Jimmy Robertson opened his season in impressive fashion as he was 15 of 26 passing for 225 yards and a touchdown ... Senior
Eren Savasli emerged as a favorite target, catching six balls for 135 yards in the win ... The Engineers got on the board when Costa busted up the middle for a 22-yard score on fourth down ... Costa struck again on a fourth down conversion, this time from six yards out to put the Engineers on top, 14-0, at the end of the first half ... The Engineers upped the pressure early in the third quarter as Robertson tossed a beautiful ball to
Pat McCarthy, hitting the sophomore receiver in stride for a 24-yard touchdown strike ... RPI added to its big lead in the fourth quarter when Costa scored from one yard out. After a botched snap on the PAT, McCarthy picked up the loose ball and rushed into the right side of the end zone for a 29-0 lead ... The Gulls got on the board with 4:36 remaining in the game, as Tyler Felix punched into the end zone for a one-yard touchdown ... Late in the game, Endicott punted from the back of its own end zone ... A 45-yard boot was fielded by junior
Mike Fil, who made everyone miss as he scampered for the score ... Rensselaer posted 354 yards of total offense (129 rushing, 225 passing), while the Gulls netted 292 (156 rushing, 136 passing) ... Endicott quarterback Phil Konopka was 14 of 28 for 136 yards and two interceptions. The freshman also ran for 18 yards and was also sacked three times.
