TROY, N.Y. – Senior Andrew Mondo (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) surrendered just one run on five hits in 8.0 innings of game two, as the ninth-ranked Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team earned a split of a doubleheader against Clarkson University, at Robison Field. The Engineers (9-4; 1-1 Liberty League) fell in the first game, 5-0, before downing the Golden Knights (2-7; 1-1), 12-1, in the nightcap.

Mondo (3-1) gave up just five singles and walked one batter, while matching his career high for strikeouts, recording 11 for the third time in the last two seasons and the first time in 2010. Sophomore righthander Jason Griffith (Lititz, PA/Warwick) came on in relief to pitch a hit-less ninth.

Rensselaer took advantage of a three-error third inning by the Golden Knights to put up five runs in the frame. Senior left fielder Camden Mamigonian (Dover, NH/Dover) delivered the lone RBI of the inning for the Engineers on a single to left.

The Engineers scored three more times in the fourth to take an 8-0 lead. The inning was highlighted by a two-run home run by sophomore Billy Nikolski (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Spa).

Senior catcher Patrick Reardon (Troy, NY/LaSalle Institute) supplied some insurance in the late inning, belting a pair of home runs over the right field fence. Clarkson was able to push a run across in the eighth, on an RBI base-hit by pinch-hitter Chris Falteisek (Baldwinsville, NY/CW Baker).

Reardon finished 3 for 4 with three runs scored and two runs batted in. Senior Scott Robinson (Schenectady, NY/Mohonasen) went 2 for 4 with three runs and an RBI. Golden Knights senior Steve Magovney (Watertown, NY/Immaculate Heart) was 1 for 3 with a run.

In game one, junior righthander David Goerold (Clifton Park, NY/Shenedehowa) allowed just five hits and no runs and Clarkson hit three home runs in shutting out Rensselaer.

Goerold struck out four batters and walked just two in a complete game 7.0 innings. Four of the hits he allowed were singles and the other was a double. Offensively Clarkson belted home runs in the first inning, the fourth and the sixth to pace the attack.

Clarkson jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, highlighted by a two-run home run by senior outfielder Brady Torbitt (Fulton, NY/Mexico). The Golden Knights added solo home runs by senior Brett Peplowski (Albany, NY/Colonie) and sophomore David Kinney (Mexico, NY/Mexico) for the final margin.

Senior Ryan Washburn (Gansevoort, NY/Schuylerville) suffered the loss for RPI, allowing six hits and five runs (4 earned) in 5.0 innings. He struck out eight batters and walked three.

Both teams are back in action tomorrow with the final two games of the four-game series at Robison Field (12pm).
