TROY, N.Y. – All nine starters recorded at least one hit and five recorded multiple knocks as the Rensselaer baseball team defeated William Paterson University, 15-4, in a non-league contest at Robison Field. With the win the Engineers improve to 12-9 overall, while the Pioneers fall to 13-12-1.
After a scoreless top of the first inning, the Engineers scored four times in the bottom of the frame to take a 4-0 lead. An RBI-double from senior catcher
Patrick Reardon (Troy, NY/LaSalle Institute) drove home sophomore designated hitter
Kyle Lavigne (Ashland, MA/Ashland), all the way from first, to the open the scoring. Senior left fielder
Camden Mamigonian (Dover, NH/Dover) added a run-scoring single, which was followed by a sacrifice fly off the bat of classmate
Andrew Krushelnyski (Bloomfield Hills, MI/Brother Rice).
The game was held scoreless until the bottom of the fifth, when the Engineers put another crooked number on the board, scoring six times on five hits, with the aid of one Pioneers' error. The inning was highlighted by a two-run double by senior third baseman
Scott Robinson (Shenectady, NY/Mohonasen), which scored freshman
Sujith Murali (Plainsboro, NJ/W. Windsor South) and Mamigonian.
The Pioneers got on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth on a run-scoring double by sophomore Anthony Dorio (Lyndhurst, NJ/Lyndhurst), but RPI answered in the bottom of the inning as Krushelnyski plated Mamigonian with a groundout to second.
Rensselaer tacked on five more runs in the bottom half of the seventh inning to extend its lead to 15-1. Murali and junior
Billy Nikolski (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) came through with RBI-singles, while Krushelnyski added another sac fly.
William Paterson then put together a three-run top of the eight to pull with 15-4, before Engineers' junior
Mike Cieszko (Stevenson Ranch, CA/William S. Hart) came on to pitch a scoreless ninth.
Senior
John Dreimiller (Ticonderoga, NY/Ticonderoga) earned the win in relief, allowing a hit and two walks in 2.0 innings. RPI starter
Ryan Washburn (Gansevoort, NY/Schuylerville) pitched 3.0 inning, giving up two hits with three strikeouts. Four other RPI pitchers saw action, including sophomore
Jason Griffith (Lititz, PA/Warwick), who threw a perfect seventh.
Robinson went 3 for 3 with a run and two RBI. Freshman
Jonny Rio (Maplewood, NJ/Columbia) ended up 3 for 4 with a run, while Nikolski was 3 for 5 with a run and two RBI.
Dorio finished 2 for 5 with a run scored for the visitors, while sophomore left fielder Jack Montanile (Weehawken, NJ/Hudson Catholic) went 1 for 4 with two runs.
Rensselaer is back on the diamond this weekend, when takes on Union for a home-and-home series. Action begins on Saturday with a doubleheader in Schenectady (12pm) and continues on Sunday with second twin bill at Robison Field (12pm). William Paterson hosts New Jersey City tomorrow afternoon (3:30pm).
