SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Playing in a makeup doubleheader from Saturday's rainout, the Union College baseball team lost a pair, 14-3 and 8-0, to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Monday afternoon at Central Park. The losses move the Dutchmen's record to 5-18 overall and 1-11 in the conference, while the win improves the Engineers to 16-9 and 6-6.

During game one, RPI freshman shortstop Jonny Rio (Maplewood, NJ) led all batters with four RBIs with a 2-for-5 showing at the plate. Senior first baseman Andrew Krushelnyski (Bloomfield, Hills, MI) was right behind with three RBIs and a 3-for-5 day in the box.

Junior centerfielder Jarid Hotaling (Schenectady, NY/Albany Academy) led the way for the Dutchmen, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Freshman third baseman Dylan Katz-Wick (Concord, MA) and freshman second baseman Emmanuel Fabre (Bronx, NY) also drove in runs.

The Engineers established a 4-0 advantage after an inning and a half thanks in part to a two-run home run by Rio in the first. The Dutchmen responded when senior leftfielder John Johnson (Smithtown, NY) scored for the Dutchmen after he doubled to right field in the second. Freshman second baseman Emmanuel Fabre (Bronx, NY) drove in Johnson with a single to leftfield.

Union continued its scoring in the third, pulling within one (4-3), but RPI busted the game wide open in the latter stages, scoring two runs in the fifth and sixth innings and six in the seventh. In the top of the fifth, RPI reestablished a three-run lead with two, two-out runs. The last came on a single the right field by junior centerfielder Billy Nikolski (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) that ended with a play at the plate, but Krushelnyski avoided the tag at home.

Senior Ryan Washburn (Gansevoort, NY) earned the victory, striking out 11 in a complete game. He improved to 3-2 on the year. Senior Andy Brown (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) earned the loss after throwing six innings and striking out one.

In game two, pitching paced the Engineers as junior Mike Cieszko (Stevenson Ranch, CA) threw seven innings, striking out 10.

He got offensive support from senior catcher Patrick Reardon (Troy, NY/LaSalle Institute), who homered in the first inning to give his team a 2-0 lead.  A long ball by senior leftfielder Cameron Mamigonian (Dover, NH) put RPI up 6-0 in the fifth; an inning after the Engineers put three on the board in the fourth.

Senior pitcher Andrew Catellier (Voorheesville, NY/Clayton A. Bouton) took the loss for Union. He struck out two in four and a third. Junior pitcher Jeremy LeFebrve (Cheshire, MA) provided two and two thirds of relief and whiffed three batters.
