Garrett Harms Wins 2010 NYSCTC Decathlon

Junior wins five of 10 events, including four on day two to win this year's title

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) junior Garrett Harms trailed by just three points after the first day of action at the NYSCTC Decathlon, but made it count in the finals as he won the 2010 title with an NCAA Provisional score of 6,098 points. His score was 559 points better than teammate Alex Morin, who was this year's runner-up.

Harms (Newburyport, MA/Newburyport) captured this year's title with victories in five of the ten events, including four wins on day two. He won the 1500-m run in a time of 4:29.45 and then picked up field victories in the javelin (49.97 meters), the pole vault (3.71 meters) and the discus (31.51 meters).

Highlights from his first day was a win in the shot put, posting a mark of 10.40 meters for the victory. He was second in the 400-dash with a time of 50.94 and was third in the 100-dash (11.95), long jump (5.67m) and high jump (1.75m).

Morin (Mendon, MA/Nipmuc Regional) rallied from third place after the first day to finish second overall at this year's Decathlon. He posted 5,539 points, winning the 110-m hurdles race in a time of 15.63. His other top finish came in the pole vault, where he was second with a height of 3.11 meters.

Also competing on the men's side were rookies David Kastner (West Islip, NY/West Islip) and Kieran Davis (Cornwall, NY/Cornwall Central), who finished sixth (4,584 pts) and seventh (4,382 pts), respectively. Kastner's efforts in day two were highlighted by a second place finish in the 110-m hurdles (15.98m), while Davis was second in the 1500-m run (4:39.07).

On the women's side, sophomore Lindsey Dubas (Windsor, NY/Windsor Central) finished fifth overall in the Heptathlon, posting 3,446 points. Among her top performances in the final day of action was a fifth-place finish in the 800-m run (2:37.88) and sixth in the long jump (4.59m).

Junior Missy Steciuk (Cohoes, NY/Cohoes) rounded out the women's efforts in ninth with 3,088 points.

Ithaca sophomore Emma Dewart won this year's title with 4,724 points. Her mark was an NCAA Automatic score.

The Rensselaer men earned 23 points toward their team total heading into this weekend's NYSCTC Outdoor Championships at Harkness Track & Field, while the women bring four points into the State Meet. Action at this year's championships begins on Friday at 1pm and continues on Saturday with a 10am start.
