TROY, N.Y. – The Williams College baseball team scored nine runs in the top of sixth inning to break a 5-5 tie, on its way to defeating Rensselaer, 17-6, in non-league action at Robison Field. With the win, the Ephs improve to 21-9-1 overall, while the Engineers fall to 19-12.
Williams' nine-run six came by way of eight hits and two Rensselaer miscues in the field. Freshman third baseman Taylor Mondshein (Larchmont, NY/Mamaroneck) delivered two run-scoring triples in the frame, including the biggest blow – a bases clearing three-bagger with two outs. Senior Al Mathews (North Hampton, NH/Phillips Exeter) and junior James Allison (Amherst, MA/Amherst) also came through with RBI-hits for the visitors.
The Ephs tacked on a run in the seventh and two more in the eighth as the Engineers were all but shut down by the Williams bullpen.
Sophomore lefthander Matt Berdoff (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) earned the victory tossing 3.0 innings, while allowing just one run on three hits. He struck out a game-high six batters with just one walk. Freshman Jimmy Ray (Glen Gardner, NJ/Voorhees) then pitched two hit-less innings, recording one strikeout.
The visitors got the scoring started early, as each of the first three batters of the game singled and came around to score. Williams added a fourth run in the top of the second, before the Engineers answered with two in the bottom of the inning.
Senior left fielder
Camden Mamigonian (Dover, NH/Dover), who ended up 2 for 4, hit his fifth home of the season to get the Engineers in the board. Classmate
Scott Robinson (Schenectady, NY/Mohonasen) then doubled down the leftfield line and was driven home on a single by junior
Billy Nikolski (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake).
RPI tied the game in the bottom of the fourth, when Robinson plated a run with a single. Senior catcher
Noah Poissant (Cohoes, NY/Cohoes) then drove in the tying run with a sacrifice fly to center.
The two teams traded one run fifth innings, before the Ephs broke the game open in the sixth. Mathews finished 4 for 6 with four runs scored and three runs batted in. Allison went 3 for 6 with four runs and an RBI.
Leading the Engineers offensively was senior second baseman
Tom Jebb (Ticonderoga, NY/Ticonderoga), who ended up 2 for 4 with a double and two runs scored. Sophomore reliever
Jeremy Lockwood-Menard (Chelsea, PQ/Ashbury College) pitched well in relief for RPI, allowing just one hit over 3.1 innings.
The Engineers are back in action this weekend, when they face North Country-rival St. Lawrence for a critical four-game series. Play opens with a doubleheader on Friday (12pm).
