TROY, N.Y. – Senior
Camden Mamigonian's (Dover, NH/Dover) lead-off homerun in the bottom of the sixth sparked a three-run effort for the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team, which defeated St. Joseph's College, 7-3, on Thursday at a windy Robison Field. The Engineers improved to 22-14 on the season, while the Golden Eagles dropped to 18-20 overall.
Holding a 2-1 advantage, Rensselaer broke open a close game in its own half of the sixth as Mamigonian sent a long fly ball into right, which was carried out by strong winds for his sixth homerun of the season. With an out on the board and a runner on third,
Josh Brooks (Lake Katrine, NY/Kingston) singled to bring in the run and push the advantage to three (4-1) and later came across on a ground out by
Tom Jebb (Ticonderoga, NY/Ticonderoga) for a 5-1 lead.
St. Joseph's grabbed a run back in the seventh inning as sophomore Prateek Thaman (Hauppauge, NY/Hauppauge) took advantage of runners on second and third, sending a shot past the reach of the second baseman to cut the deficit to three (5-2).
RPI grabbed the run back and added on in the bottom of the seventh after a lead-off homerun from senior
Andrew Krushelnyski (Bloomfield Hills, MI/Brother Rice) and a triple by Mamigonian brought two runs across for a 7-2 lead.
The Golden Eagles pushed across another run in the eighth and held off the Engineers in the bottom of the inning, setting up a wild finish to the game. Facing a two-out situation, St. Joseph's Thaman reached on an error, followed by a walk to Chris Wright (Hicksville, NY/Holy Trinity). Both runners advanced on a wild pitch by
Ryan Washburn (Gansevoort, NY/Schuylerville), who then walked Nick Rizzo (Massapequa, NY/Farmingdale) to bring the tying run to the plate.
Washburn, who allowed just one run on two hits through 2.0 innings, got out of trouble to end the game as Brian Hannigan (West Babylon, NY/St. John the Baptist) sent a grounder to the shortstop to seal the victory.
Freshman
Mike Campisi (Kings Park, NY/Kings Park) made his first career start and first appearance of the season in picking up the win for RPI. He allowed one run on three hits through 5.0 innings with two strikeouts. Offensively, the Engineers were led by Mamigonian, who was 2 for 2 at the plate with a run scored and two RBI.
For St. Joseph's, junior Charles Zilnicki (Riverhead, NY/Riverhead) went 2 for 4 with an RBI, while Thaman was 1 for 4 with a run batted in. On the mound, Joe Benkert (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) shouldered the loss, allowing five runs (4 earned) on seven hits through 6.0 innings with three strikeouts.
The Engineers are back in action on Friday when they travel to Saratoga Springs for Liberty League doubleheader against Skidmore (1pm). St. Joseph's closes out its regular season on Tuesday at Farmingdale (7pm).
