TROY, N.Y. – Senior pitcher Ryan Washburn threw a no-hitter in game one to lead the Rensselaer baseball team to a 2-0 victory over Skidmore in Liberty League action at Robison Field. Winning game two of the doubleheader, 10-6, the Thoroughbreds move to 27-13 overall (16-8 Liberty League), while the Engineers are now 24-16 (13-11 Liberty League).

Washburn (Gansevoort, NY/Shuylerville) faced just one batter over the minimum as an error kept the righthander from throwing a perfect game. He struck out 11 batters without a walk in 7.0 innings, including a stretch of seven consecutive strikeouts.

Senior Camden Mamigonian (Dover, NH/Dover) provided all the offense the home side would need in the bottom of second inning, delivering his seventh home run of the season – a solo shot to right – to give RPI a 1-0 lead.

Back-to-back hits by senior catcher Patrick Reardon (Troy, NY/LaSalle Institute) and Mamigonian in the fourth led to the Engineers second run, as Washburn (5-3) was able to go the distance for his fifth win the of the year.

Skidmore lefty Spencer Marcus (Scarsdale, NY/Scarsdale) took the tough-luck loss, surrendering just two runs (1 earned) on four hits in 6.0 innings. He struck out seven batters and did not issue a walk.

Game two saw the Thoroughbreds answer a one-run Engineers bottom of the second with a five-run top of the third. Five straight hits with two outs in the frame led to the five runs as the visitors took advantage of a Rensselaer error earlier in the stanza. Highlighting the inning was an RBI-triple off the bat of senior Jake Lowry (West Hartford, CT/St. George's).

The Thoroughbreds added a run in the top of the fourth and two more in the fifth on a two-run home run by sophomore Zach Rudman (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford-Mendon).

An RBI-double by Reardon followed by a run-scoring single by Mamigonian in the bottom of the fifth brought the hosts to within 8-3, but Skidmore pushed its advantage back to seven runs (10-3), scoring a pair in the top of the seventh.

Rensselaer fought back with a two-run seventh of their own as Reardon and senior third baseman Tom Jebb (Ticonderoga, NY/Ticonderoga) both came home on an error by Skidmore right fielder Matty Tatkow (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury).

The Engineers were then able to load the bases in the bottom of the ninth and even plated one run before Rudman came on to close the door and earn his team-leading sixth save of the season. Skidmore starter Nick Laracuente (Tenafly, NJ/Tenafly) earned the win pitching 6.2 innings, while giving up five runs (3 earned) on nine hits. He struck out four, while walking one.

With the split, the Engineers need a doubleheader sweep from either St. Lawrence or Clarkson tomorrow afternoon in order to earn a spot in the 2010 Liberty League Tournament. The Saints and Golden Knights face off in a twin bill tomorrow afternoon with first pitch set for 12pm.
