TROY, N.Y. – The 2010 ESPN The Magazine National Academic All-America College Division Men's Track & Field/Cross Country Teams have been announced and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athlete
Garrett Harms has been named to the Second Team. This is the second straight career honor for Harms, who becomes the fifth RPI student-athlete to garner Academic All-America honors this season.
Harms, a junior from Newburyport, Mass., carried a 3.94 cumulative grade point average as a dual major in nuclear and mechanical engineering. An Academic All-District First Team selection, he is a Liberty League All-Academic selection. Harms is also a multiple Dean's List selection and an RPI Medalist.
A member of several honor societies, including the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Society, the American Nuclear Society and Alpha Nu Sigma, Harms is the recipient of the Dyce Prize, which honors students with high scholastic abilities and constructive leadership. The recipient of the Founders Award, he also serves a tutor to his fellow peers on campus and has interned at Proctor & Gamble Manufacturing.
One of the top multi-event competitors for the Engineers in 2010, Harms helped guide the RPI men to the its second consecutive Liberty League Indoor Championship title and a victory at the New York State Meet. Competing in the five-event pentathlon at States, he finished second of 13 participants and was just 10 points out of first place.
Harms' success continued in the outdoor season as he once again helped RPI to a conference title – its second straight. One of his best outings of the season came at the NYSCTC Championships, where he won the Decathlon with an NCAA Provisional mark of 6,098 points after claiming victory in five of 10 events.
A former standout at Newburyport High School, Harms was a Liberty League Field Performer of the Week selection once in 2010.
As a sophomore, Harms led the RPI men to titles at the conference indoor and outdoor championships. An Academic All-America Third Team selection in 2009, his top performance came at the indoor state meet, where he was fourth in the Pentathlon.
