TROY, N.Y. - Freshman Liana Viaggio deflected a long-range shot by Alissa Peterson into the upper half of the cage just 3:53 into overtime to give the Rensselaer field hockey team a 2-1 victory over St. Lawrence in a critical Liberty League contest.  With the win, the Engineers improve to 7-4 overall and 4-2 in the league.  They seal up third place in the standings.  St. Lawrence falls to 7-6 and 1-3.

With both teams playing six aside, Peterson (Gaithersburg, MD/Quice Orchard) set up the winning goal by driving the ball low toward the cage from the top of the circle.  Viaggio (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) deflected the shot above the goalie and into the back of the net for her fifth goal of the season.  The assist for Peterson, the team's leading scorer (18 points), was her sixth of the year.

St. Lawrence held a 1-0 lead at halftime on a goal by senior Erika Swits (Ballston Spa, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake), who buried a shot off a loose ball at the 28:15 mark.  Junior Ashley Ferenczy (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville), who started the play with a feed from the right sidelines, was credited with the assist.

The Engineers, who had lost 13 straight and 20 of 24 meetings to the Saints, tied the game on a breakaway goal by sophomore Sarah Krolus (Westminster, MD/Garrison Forest School) just 3:05 into the second half.  For Krolus, the goal was her first of the season.

Senior Brianna Earle (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) earned the win in goal for RPI as she stopped four shots. Krolus added a defensive save for the Engineers.  For St. Lawrence, Nicole Matos (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) made 11 saves, while Taylor Vogt (Rochester, NY/Brighton) had a defensive save.

Rensselaer held a 24-6 advantage in shots, including 14-6 on goal, and a 12-7 edge in penalty corners.

The Engineers return to action on Sunday afternoon when they host New England College in a non-league game at 2pm at Harkness Field.  The Saints travel to Vassar for a league game on Friday at 4pm.
