TROY, N.Y. – Junior
Dan Duval threw a seven-inning complete game to lead the Rensselaer baseball to team a 14-2 win over St. Lawrence in game 1 of a doubleheader. The Saints came back to take the nightcap, 10-2, to move to 3-9 overall (1-3 Liberty League). The Engineers are now 9-5 on the season, including a 3-1 mark in conference play.
Duval (Middleton, MA/Masconomet) kept the St. Lawrence hitters off balance throughout game one of the doubleheader, recording seven strikeouts, while allowing just two runs (one earned) on seven hits in 7.0 innings. Staked to an early 5-0 lead after two, Duval did not allow an earned run until the bottom of the 7th inning.
RPI's four-run second was capped off by a two-run single by sophomore
Tanner Boucher (Keene, NH/Keene), who delivered a lofted line drive to left, plating juniors
Cody Vincent (Catskill, NY/John A. Coleman) and
Kyle LaVigne (Ashland, NY/Ashland).
After scoring another run in the third, the Engineers tacked on three more in the fourth. Senior centerfielder
Billy Nikolski (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) and junior catcher
Kyle Kopacz (Chatham, NJ/Chatham) each came through with a run-scoring doubles, before Vincent plated a run with a base-hit.
Rensselaer followed a two-run sixth inning with a three-run seventh, as LeVigne came through with another hit, which – coupled with a Saints throwing error – plated a pair of RPI runs.
St. Lawrence came out the aggressor in game two, scoring six runs in the first inning on six hits. Sophomore shortstop Ethan Braddock (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) and freshman Bryan Palermo (Jamesport, NY/Riverhead) each had RBI-hits in the frame.
Palermo then came through with a run-scoring single in the third, before classmate Khifer O'Connor (Pembrooke, ON/Lawrenceville School) drilled a line-drive home run to right in the sixth.
The two clubs traded two-run eighth innings to close out the scoring.
Saints starting pitcher Jason Conde (Voorheesville, NY/Clayton A. Bouton) went the distance, giving up two runs on six hits in 9.0 innings. He struck out three, while walking two.
