ROCHESTER, NY – Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute scored five unearned runs in its last three innings to pull away for a 9-4 victory over the University of Rochester in Liberty League baseball at Towers Field. The victory boosts RPI's record to 7-3 in the league and 14-9 overall. Rochester is now 5-7 in conference play and 10-15 overall.
RPI hit as the home team this afternoon. The game was originally scheduled for Saturday, but that doubleheader was moved to Monday with steady rain predicted on Saturday. A wet snowshower hit during the fifth inning of the seven-inning game. When it persisted during the between-game break, game two was cancelled.
Dan Duval earned the win for the Engineers. He pitched a complete-game, scattering seven hits in seven innings with two walks and one strikeout. He allowed four runs, two of them earned. He is 5-1.
Jon Menke took the loss for Rochester. In 4.2 innings, he yielded eight hits, seven runs (three earned), walked four, and struck out four. Jeremy Diller finished up, giving up four hits, two runs (one earned), with one walk in 1.1 innings. Menke is 1-2.
Rochester took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Rob Barnard singled and Alex Caghan homered to left center. Caghan hit his first HR of the spring on Sunday to trigger a six-run outburst as Rochester defeated RPI, 12-8.
The Engineers loaded the bases against Menke in the third. Billy Nikolski singled home one run and Jonny Rio singled home another to tie the score. RPI went ahead in the fourth. Tanner Boucher singled and Kevin Prosicki was hit by a pitch. A groundout advanced both men. Boucher scored on a sac fly by Cody Vincent and Prosicki made it 4-2 after a pickoff throw to first sailed high.
In the RPI fifth, the Engineers took advantage of three Rochester errors to score three times. Kyle Kopacz and Nikolski had run-scoring singles.
Rochester got a pair back –both unearned – in the sixth. Caghan walked. Steve Just singled to right and when the ball skipped away, it put men on second and third. Caghan scored on a wild pitch and Chris Davis singled home Just. Pinch-hitter Alex Parker singled to put two men aboard. Duval settled down, getting Tyler DeClerck to rap into a 4-6-3 double play and retiring Nate Mulberg on a comebacker.
The Engineers are back on the diamond on Wednesday at Castleton State (4pm), while the Yellowjackets host Ithaca on Wednesday (4pm).
