TROY, N.Y. – The 2011 Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) football schedule has been finalized and the Engineers will once again play a nine-game regular season slate. This year marks the first for RPI under head coach Tim Landis, who was hired in March.
Five of the Engineers' games will be played at home at the East Campus Stadium, while the other four are road contests. There are two opponents who played in the NCAA Tournament and Rensselaer has six Liberty League contests, including three in Troy.
RPI opens the campaign at 1pm on September 10 at Alfred University. The Saxons are coming off a 2010 season in which it won a school record 10 games and advanced to the NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals. One of their three losses was to Rensselaer, 27-24.
The Engineers – and Landis, who replaced Joe King, who retired after 22 years at the helm – make their home debut with the team's first-ever meeting against Castleton State College on September 17. It will be just the second night game in Troy as kickoff is set for 6pm. RPI opens its league schedule the next week, traveling to Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) for the Transit Trophy Game at 1pm.
Rensselaer's next three games are at home, including two Liberty League games. The University of Rochester visits on October 1 (1pm) before Utica College comes to Troy on October 8 for the Engineers' final non-league game, beginning at 1pm. Following a bye, RPI hosts defending Liberty League champion St. Lawrence University on October 22 at 1pm for Homecoming & Reunion Weekend.
October 29 marks the 62nd Dutchman Shoe's Trophy Game – the annual matchup with Union College – at 1pm in Schenectady. The Engineers won last year's meeting, 21-7, and have now captured four of the last five games between the two schools. RPI and Union have the oldest collegiate football rivalry in New York State, having played 108 times.
Rensselaer's final road game is November 5 at Hobart College (12pm) and the regular season finale is the following Saturday, November 12 against the United States Merchant Marine Academy. Kickoff is 2pm at East Campus Stadium.
