TROY, N.Y. – Senior
Kyle LaVigne had a six-hit day to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team to a pair of come-from-behind victories over Clarkson University, in Liberty League action at Robison Field. With wins of 13-11 and 4-3, the Engineers improve to 8-8 overall (5-1 Liberty), while the Golden Knights drop to 7-8 (1-5 Liberty).
After falling behind 4-1 after just one inning of game one, the Engineers put up a five-run bottom of the second to take control of the contest.
Junior
Jonny Rio (Maplewood, NJ/Columbia) drove in a run with a base-hit, before sophomore
Andrew Kalish (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) picked up an RBI single of his own. LeVigne (Ashland, MA/Ashland) then came through win the innings biggest blow – a bases-clearing triple with one away.
Erickson delivered a towering home run to deep right field with one out in the third, for the inning's only run.
A two-run double by Clarkson junior Pete Lasecki (Stratford, CT/Frank S. Bunnell) brought the visitors to within 7-6 in the top of the fourth, but RPI answered with a five-run bottom half of the frame to go up by six. Erickson highlighted the stanza once again, delivering a two-run double.
Sophomore righthander
Tim Gallagher (Snohomish, WA/Snohomish) earned the win in relief, giving up three runs on one hit, while striking out three in 1.2 innings.
In game two, both starting pitchers got off to solid starts, including Golden Knights righty Bryan Chudy (Goshen, NY/Goshen), who finished with just two earned runs allowed on seven hits in 7.0 innings. RPI starter
Levi Washburn (Gansevoort, NY/Schuylerville) took a no-decision, surrendering three runs on six hits in 6.0 innings of work.
Clarkson once again took the lead first, building an early 3-0 advantage, thanks to 3 for 4 game from junior Scott Morrissey (Troy, NY/LaSalle Institute). He scored two runs and drove in the other for the Golden Knights.
A four-run sixth inning was all the Engineers needed to complete the comeback, as RBI hits by Erickson and Korte created just enough separation to earn in the victory.
Freshman
Sean Conroy (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) threw 4.0 strong innings of relief to pick up the win for RPI, giving up just three singles, while striking out two.
Both teams are back in action tomorrow morning with a doubleheader, scheduled for 10:30am.
