SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College baseball team earned a split with a 4-3 win over RPI in game two of Saturday's Liberty League doubleheader at Castle Diamond. The Engineers took the opener, 12-0.
The Thoroughbreds move to 24-10 overall and 15-7 in league play, while RPI is now 17-17 overall and 14-8 in the league.
In the opener,
Levi Washburn tossed a two-hit shutout as the RPI offense pounded out 13 hits and took advantage of eight Skidmore errors en route to the 12-0 win.
The Engineers got on the board with two in the first after opening the game with three straight walks. They put up one in the second and two in the fourth to push the lead to 5-0.
Andrew Kalish made it 8-0 with a three-run blast in the fifth, his second of the season. RPI capped the scoring in the sixth, scoring four runs on three hits and three errors.
Washburn (2-2) faced just four over the minimum, allowing two singles and two walks while striking out six. Zack Rudman (5-3) took the loss for Skidmore.
In game two, Isaac Forman tossed a complete game and Erik Watkins drove in three runs as the Thoroughbreds rallied from three runs down for the 4-3 victory.
The Engineers got on the board first behind RBI singles from
Kyle LaVigne and
Chuck Erickson to take a 2-0 lead after one. They made it a 3-0 lead on a Johnny Rio run-scoring single in the fifth.
Skidmore cut the lead to 3-2 in the sixth on an RBI single from Watkins and a bases-loaded walk by Nick Barra. The Thoroughbreds came right back in the seventh to take the lead on a two-run double from Watkins, making it 4-3.
Forman was able to hold onto the lead with some help from his defense as Leejay Pollacchi made an over the shoulder catch in center field to prevent an extra base-hit in the ninth as Skidmore held on for the 4-3 win.
Forman (6-1) allowed three runs on eight hits, while striking out eight in the complete game victory.
Mike Campisi got the start for the Engineers as he allowed two runs on four hits over 5.2 innings, while
Jason Griffith tossed 0.1 innings and
Sean Conroy (0-1) suffered the loss as he allowed one run on two hits in two innings of relief.
The teams return to action tomorrow as they are scheduled for a 12 p.m. start at RPI.
