TROY, N.Y. - Freshman
Jared Jensen threw a 7.0-inning complete game to earn the victory in game one, before hitting a grand slam, in a come-from-behind win in game as the Rensselaer baseball team swept a doubleheader with Rochester, this afternoon at Robison Field. With the win, the Engineers improve to 12-10 overall (9-3 Liberty), while the Yellow Jackets fall to 5-15 (2-9 Liberty).
In game one, Jensen (Kingston, NY/Kingston) held Rochester to just two runs on two hits over 7.0 innings, striking out three, while walking three.
He received early run support as well, as the Engineers put up a run in the top of the first on a sacrifice fly by junior
Chuck Erickson (Mansfield, MA/Mansfield). RPI then plated three in the third, thanks to an RBI-double from senior
Kyle LaVigne (Ashland, MA/Ashland) and a two-run homer from junior
Tanner Boucher (Keene, NH/Keene).
The Yellow Jackets did all of their damage in the bottom of the frame, as sophomore Sam Slutsky (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) left the yard for a two-run home run of his own.
A run-scoring single from Boucher in the fifth made it 5-2, before LaVigne produced a pair of runs in the seventh. After driving in junior
Jonny Rio (Maplewood, NJ/Columbia) with a single through the left side, LaVigne stole second and third and came around to score on a throwing error by the Yellow Jackets' catcher.
Game two saw the visitors take a 5-1 lead after three innings, with freshman backstop Brendan Garry (Ronkonkoma, NY/Sachern North) delivering the biggest blow of a four-run third – a two-run double to the gap in left center.
Rensselaer had the answer in the top of the fourth as Jensen hit a grand slam to right for his first collegiate home run. The slam tied the game at 5-5.
The Engineers took the lead for good in the top of the fifth, as back-to-back run scoring singles from LaVigne and Erickson were followed by a double steal that plated Boucher from third and sent Erickson to second.
Rochester pulled to within one (8-7) in the sixth, but a two-RBI base hit from
Eric Kozak (New York, NY/Dalton School) created separation again (10-7) from Rensselaer.
Sean Conroy (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) picked up his second save in as many days, throwing 3.2 innings of four-hit ball. He struck out one and did not allow a walk.
The Engineers return to the diamond next weekend, when they visit St. Lawrence for a four-game series, which begins on Saturday (1pm).
