AUBURNDALE, Fla. - SUNY Cortland used a four-run seventh Inning to break a 4-4 tie and the Red Dragons outlasted Rensselaer, 8-5 in a non-league contest. The win improves fourth-ranked Cortland's overall record to 7-1, while RPI drops to 2-2.
Tyler Listing got RPI off to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second with an RBI hit.
Chuck Erickson led off with a double and he came around to score on a Listing line drive to right.
The Engineers pushed the lead to 3-0 in the top of the fourth.
Jimmy Foley and Listing hit back-toback singles with an out.
Jared Jensen pushed a bunt up the third base line to load the bases and
Eric Kozak singled in Foley. Tim LaSuer had a sacrifice fly to center to score Listing. Cortland got to RPI starter
Mike Campisi in the bottom of the fourth, scoring a pair of runs on three hits. Chris Jackson singled before Max Rosing and Anthony Iacomini both registered doubles for the Red Dragons.
RPI tacked on another run in the sixth for a 4-2 lead. Listing led off with a walk and eventually scored on an RBI single from LeSuer. Campisi then faced the first two batters in the sixth before yielding to
Reid Roberge after a double and a run-scoring single. Roberge gave up a pair of fly balls, the second resulting in a sac fly and a tie score.
After a scoreless RPI seventh, Roberge got the first out via a strikeout. After an error, Cortland shortstop John Adornetto hit a two-un home run to give Cortland a 6-4 lead. The Red Dragons tacked on two more runs on four singles and a walk, facing three RPI pitchers, to take an 8-4 lead after seven innings.
Adam Kalish kept the Cortland batters at bay for an inning and a third before a LeSuer single and a double by
Andrew Kalish started an RPI rally in the ninth. The Engineers could only muster a single run, on a groundball from
Jonny Rio, for the 8-5 final.
George Jweid got the win for Cortland, while Roberge took the loss and fell to 0-1. Campisi, in his second start of the year, went 5+ innings, allowing four earned runs on six hits, four strikeouts and no walks.
LeSuer continued his hot start by going 3 for 4 with two RBIs, while Listing was 2 for 3 with a pair of runs.
The Engineers take on Pitt-Greenburgh on Monday at 4pm, continuing play in the RussMatt Invitational in Central Florida.
