Baseball Upends Pitt-Greensburg, 11-4

Engineers record 17 hits, including Erickson's first career four-hit game

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - Senior Chuck Erickson went 4 for 4, including his first home run of the season, as the Rensselaer baseball team moved to 3-2 with an 11-4 victory over the Bobcats of Pitt-Greensburgh this afternoon. Junior Tim Gallagher earned the win (2-0), with 5.0 innings of solid relief.  He allowed a single earned run on three hits, striking out five and walking one.

The Bobcats got on the board first, taking a 1-0 lead in the 2nd inning on a double from Dave Coradi and single from Anthony Bazzuto.  RPI answered with four runs on six hits in the home half of the 2nd. The big blow coming via a two-run Tim LeSuer single. 

Erickson led off the 4th with a deep home run to left center, and Matthews immediately followed with his first long ball in an RPI uniform for a 6-1 lead. Tyler Listing then singled, and Al Mersman drove him home with a double. Mersman would come around to score on a wild pitch for an 8-1 RPI lead after four.

The Bobcats chased starter RPI Jared Jensen in the 4th, scoring two runs on three hits. Anthony Maroadi and Bazzuto hit singles, and Maroadi scored on a single from Matt Germanoski. Jensen departed after a walk, leaving the bases loaded for reliever Tim Gallagher. Gallagher allowed a fielders choice, then got a 4-6-3 double play to avoid further damage. 

RPI scored two more in the 4th, as Jonny Rio, Erickson, and Matthews hit consecutive singles to start the inning, Matthews earning an RBI.  Listing walked to load the bases and Mersman hit a sacrifice fly to center.

The final RPI run came in the 5th, as Erickson singled home Andrew Kalish, who had singled with one out to start the inning. The Bobcats tacked on a single run off Gallagher in the 6th. Maroadi singled to lead off the inning, scoring on Dylin Brooks two-out base hit.

In all, eight Engineers had hits, including a 3 for 5, 2 run, two-RBI performance from Matthews. Mersman scored two runs and drove in two while going 2 for 3, Listing was 2 for 4 with a pair of runs. Rio and Andrew Kalish each rapped a pair of singles and scored a run.

Stephen Schiavone threw a scoreless 9th in his first career appearance.

The Engineers continue play in the RussMatt Florida tournament tomorrow morning, taking on Husson at Chain of Lakes Park.  First pitch is scheduled for 11:30am.
