TROY, N.Y. – Getting strong starts from senior Seth Roberts and freshman Jamie Faber the Union College baseball team swept a doubleheader against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) by scores of 4-1 and 13-9, this afternoon at Robison Field. With the wins, the Dutchmen improve to 6-4 overall (3-1 Liberty League), while the Engineers drop to 9-6 (2-4 Liberty League).

Union scored a first-inning run and never trailed in the game as Roberts (Campbell Hall, NY/Washington Central) picked up his first win the year. RPI senior righthander Mike Campisi (Kings Park, NY/Kings Park) took the tough-luck loss throwing a 7.0 inning complete game, surrendering four runs (3 earned) on 11 hits. He stuck out two and walked one.

Roberts went 5.0 innings, allowing one unearned run on eight hits. He recorded two strikeouts and one walk. Union catcher David Peretti (Easton, MA/Oliver Ames) led the way offensively going 3 for 4 with two runs batted in.

Rensselaer's lone run in the game one came on a sacrifice fly by sophomore centerfielder Jared Jensen (Kingston, NY/Kingston).

In game two, the Dutchmen jumped out an early lead once again, scoring two in the first and two in the second. Senior Dylan Katz-Wicks (Concord, MA/Concord-Carlisle) kicked things off with a run-scoring double, followed by a sac fly from Peretti.

The Engineers drew even with a four-run bottom of the third, taking advantage of a Union error to extend the inning. Senior first baseman Chuck Erickson (Mansfield, MA/Mansfield) delivered the first blow, smacking a single up the middle to score RPI's first two runs. Junior Shane Matthews (Ballston Spa, NY/Saratoga Catholic) and Michael Croke (South Hadley, MA/South Hadley) followed with run-scoring singles to make it 4-4.

Union regained the lead at 5-4, when junior Sam Caruso (Glens Falls, NY/Glens Falls) singled-home freshman Mike Fitzsimmons (Montreal, PQ/Deerfield Academy).

A three-run sixth gave Rensselaer its first lead of the day, at 7-5. Jensen drove in a run with a groundout to short, before freshman Nick Annunziata (Neshanic Station, NJ/St. Joseph) ripped a double to right-center, which platted two.

The lead was short-lived as the Dutchmen took advantage of four RPI errors to score six runs in the top of the seventh. RPI scored two quick runs in the bottom of the frame, but Union was able to get those runs right back and hold on for the victory.

The Engineers return to the diamond next weekend, when they take part in a home-and-home four-game series against Vassar, beginning on Saturday in Poughkeepsie (1pm). The series continues on Sunday at Robison Field (12pm).
