WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - Sean Conroy threw eight strong inning and Jonny Rio lined a single back through the middle with one out in the bottom of the 10th inning to send Rensselaer past Penn State Altoona, 2-1 in the first game of the Engineers' trip to Florida. RPI improves to 2-1.
Deadlocked at one in the bottom of the 10th, Rensselaer's
Tim LeSuer led off with walk and was sacrificed to second base by
Andrew Kalish. After fighting off two pitches with two strikes, Rio hit a sinking line drive just out of the reach reach of a diving PS-A outfielder, and LeSuer scampered home with the winning run.
Conroy allowed just an earned run on three hits, while striking out six without a walk. He yielded to
Tim Gallagher after a leadoff single in the ninth inning. Gallagher procedeed to throw two shutout innings, inducing a double play in the ninth with a 1-2-3 tenth.
RPI took a 1-0 lead in the third when Rio drove home LeSuer with a single to second base. LeSuer reached on a fielders choice and advanced to third on a Kalish single. Rio singled with two outs for the early lead.
Penn-State Altoona touched Conroy for an earned run in the eighth, as a sac fly followed a lead-off double and a sacrifice bunt.
The Engineers, who got a pair of singles from
Chuck Erickson, take on nationally-ranked SUNY Cortland on Sunday at 2pm.
