TROY, N.Y. – Senior Mike Camisi threw a complete game, while junior
Shane Matthews hit a pair of home runs to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of St. Lawrence University by scores of 2-1 and 16-5. With the wins, the Engineers improve to 19-8 (11-5 Liberty League), while the Saints drop to 13-10 (7-7 Liberty League). The two teams wrap up the four-game series with another doubleheader in Troy on Sunday (12pm).
Campisi (Kings Park, NY/Kings Park), who gave up three singles, improves to 5-2 with a 2.21 earned run average. He now has five complete games.
RPI took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when
Shane Matthews (Ballston Spa, NY/Saratoga Catholic) singled, stole second and scored on a double to right centerfield by
Andrew Kalish (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa). The Engineers doubled their advantage in the fourth inning
Jonny Rio (Maplewood, NJ/Columbia) singled, stole second and scored on a single to rightfield by
Michael Croke (South Hadley, MA/South Hadley).
St. Lawrence finally got on the scoreboard in the sixth inning when it applied a familiar formula. Ethan Braddock (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) walked, stole second base and scored on a single by Mark Syron (Syracuse, NY/Westhill). Syron then stole second base but Campisi got out of the jam by inducing a ground ball back to the mound, which he fielded cleanly for the final out. The Saints put the tying run on in the next inning but RPI's righthander got the final two outs for the win.
Junior Joe Riley (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) pitched well for the visitors, allowing only five hits and no walks with six strikeouts. He is now 5-1.
In game two, RPI answered two first-inning Saints' runs by scoring three times in the bottom of the frame. Senior
Chuck Erickson (Mansfield, MA/Mansfield) cleared the bases with a double to leftcenter.
The Engineers tacked on six more runs in the bottom of the third. After sarting the inning with five consecutive hits, RPI later took advantage of an error and a wild pitch to score the final two runs of the frame.
A solo home run by Khifer O'Connor (Pembrooke, ON/Lawrenceville) cut the RPI lead to 10-3 in the top of the sixth. Matthews answered with a two-run shot in the bottom of the same inning.
After plating another run in the seventh, Matthews homered again – this time with the bases empty – for the fourth time this season, to make it 14-3. A Saints wild pitch and an RBI double off the bat of sophomore
Jared Jensen (Kingston, NY/Kingston) extended the host's lead to 16-3 after eight innings.
Zane Fish (Evans Mills, NY/Indian River) delivered a solo shot in the top of the ninth, before senior Carter Franz (Cazenovia, NY/Cazenovia) plated the game's final run with a run-scoring fielder's choice.
RPI freshman
Greg Echeverria (Longmeadow, MA/Longmeadow) earned the win in relief, allowing a run on four hits over 5.1 innings. He struck out three and walked two.
