TROY, N.Y. – Sophomore lefthander Jonathan Torregroza struck out eight batters in five innings to help the Montclair State baseball team to a, 6-5, victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), in non-league play from Robison Field. With the win, the Red Hawks improve to 15-18-1, while the Engineers drop to 23-11.

Torregroza (Bound Brook, NJ/Immaculata) allowed two runs on five hits in the 5.0 innings. RPI sophomore Adam Kalish (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) shouldered the loss, surrendering an unearned run on two hits in 1.2 innings. He struck out one and walked one.

Montclair State junior third baseman Juan Perdomo Jr. (South Brunswick, NJ, South Brunswick) collected drove home the eventual game-winning run in the top of the seventh with a single to center.

The Red Hawks took an early 2-0 lead on a pair of first inning runs. After taking advantage of a pair of RPI errors, designated hitter Jayson Stolz (Iselin, NJ, John F. Kennedy) came through with a run-scoring single.

Sophomore Shane Matthews (Ballston Spa, NY/Saratoga Catholic) tied the game at 2-2 with an opposite field single to right in the bottom of the inning.  Junior Al Mersman (Newark, DE/Salesianum) then gave the hosts their only lead (3-2) with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth.

After tying the game at 3-3 in the fifth, Cody Pace (Milltown, NJ, Spotswood) delivered a two-run single in the sixth to make it 5-3 Montclair State.

Mersman then came through with a big two-RBI base hit to tie the game once again (5-5).

The Engineers return to the diamond this weekend, when they conclude their regular season schedule with a home-and-home doubleheader against Skidmore College. RPI travels to Saratoga Springs on Friday (1pm), before returning home on Saturday (12pm).
