CANTON, N.Y. - The 2013 NYSCTC Outdoor Championships concluded and for the third straight season, the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's track & field team won the State Championship. The Engineers posted 169 points to beat out Ithaca (148 points) and St. Lawrence (129). for this year's title. The Rensselaer women were third with 90 points. Ithaca won the women's event with 243 points, followed by St. Lawrence, which had 152.50 points.
The second day of competition saw Rensselaer move from third place to the winners' stand with the help of five first-place finishes and a pair of runner-ups.
Junior
Zac Borrelli (Methuen, MA / Central Catholic) enjoyed two first place finishes, winning the shot put in 14.91 and the discus with a throw of 45.59. The discus was actually the men's team's most successful event as
Jonathan Underwood (Newport News, VA) was second (personal best 41.02) and
Devan Hayes (McMinnville, OR / McMinnville) finished third (40.40) to help the Engineers compile 24 points in that event alone. Hayes also finished fourth in the shot put with a throw of 13.72 and teammate
Tyler Yeastedt had a sixth place showing with a 13.26. Junior
Stephen Silber (Blossvale, NY / Mount Anthony Union) earned first place in the high jump on a jump-off with a 1.98.
On the track, senior
Patrick Cavanaugh (Cheshire, CT / Cheshire) won the 3000-steeplechase with a season's-best time of 9:21.07 and sophomore
Tyler Gumina (Rochester, NY / Penfield) won the 1500-meters with a 4:03.05. Senior
David Kastner (West Islip, NY / West Islip) was runner-up in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.84.
Rensselaer's women's team was led on Saturday by senior Grace Tilton (Concord, NH / Concord) on the track and junior Ivy Muchuma (Nashua, NH / Nashua North) in the field. Tilton was second in the 1500-meters with a school record time of 4:37.99 and was fourth in the 800 with a near-school record time of 2:17.58. Muchuma, who was second in the hammer and third in the javelin on Friday, won the shot put (12.54). She was also seventh in the triple jump (10.42) and fifth in the discus (33.40). Freshman teammate Andrea Ukleja (Wayne, NJ / Wayne Hills) earned 10 points for the Engineers by winning the discus with a throw of 34.80 meters.
