TROY, NY -- Sarah Krolus (Westminster, MD / Garrison Forest School) scored the gamewinner with just over three minutes to play, breaking 2-all tie, leading Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) to a 3-2 win over Hartwick in non-conference field hockey action on Wednesday afternoon at Harkness Field. With the win, the Engineers improve to 2-1 on the season, while Hartwick drops to 1-1.

RPI dominated the scoreless first half, outshooting Hartwick, 10-2, and drawing three corners on the Hawks. Despite the effort, the score was tied at 0-0 at the halftime break.

The Engineers jumped out to a 2-0 lead to start the second half. Angela Cascio (Wyndmoor, PA / Springside School) scored her first goal of the season in the 39th minute, taking the ball herself across the front of the cage, knocking it past Hartwick goalkeeper Shannon Carter with a reverse stick shot. Six minutes later, Brianna Kilberg (McMurray, PA / Peters Township) doubled the RPI advantage, taking an assist from Catherine Mahoney (Troy, NY / Emma Willard). Mahoney took an initial shot, which Kilberg redirected into the cage to put the Engineers ahead, 2-0.

Hartwick would not fold, however, as the Hawks got on the board at 48:04 with a goal by Meghan Fay. Kelly Kramer took a hard shot from the top of the circle on a penalty corner, and Fay got her stick on it to score the Hawks' first tally of the day. Hartwick continued to battle, and Jessica Ott scored the equalizer on an assist from Megan Lefeber on another penalty corner attempt in the 66th minute.

With time winding down, RPI held possession in its offensive end. Kelsey Porter crossed the ball down the end line to Krolus, who sent the ball into the left corner of the cage to put the Engineers back on top for good.

RPI outshot Hartwick, 17-10, in the game, and held a 6-4 advantage in penalty corners. Engineer goalkeeper Hannah Clough (Acton, MA / Acton-Boxborough Regional) - the reigning Liberty League Defensive Player of the Week - made four saves in a complete-game performance, while Carter stopped six shots for the Hawks.

RPI will return to action on Saturday, visiting Mount Holyoke at 12pm.
