Box Score

LAKELAND, Fla. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team scored seven runs in the top of the ninth inning to beat New Jersey City University, 14-7, today in non-league play from Southeastern University. With the win, the Engineers improve to 4-1 on the season, while the Gothic Knights drop to 1-5.

After both teams scored twice in the first inning, NJCU plated three in the bottom of the second to take a 5-2 lead. RBI-singles by Miguel Aviles (Union City, NJ/Saint Mary's) and Alex Weinstein (Colonia, NJ/JFK-Iselin) ignited the rally, before an RPI error allowed the third run to score.

The Engineers drew to within 5-4 in the third, as junior Jared Jensen (Kingston, NY/Kingston) plated classmate Tim LeSuer (Oak View, CA/Nordhoff) with a single to center. Shane Matthews (Ballston Spa, NY/Saratoga Catholic) then drove home Jensen with a base hit between second and third.

New Jersey City pushed its advantage to two runs (6-4) on an Andrew Niech (Avenel, NJ/Colonia) ground ball that turned into an RPI error in the bottom of the fourth.

Rensselaer fought back with a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to take its first lead at 7-6. A sacrifice fly off the bat of sophomore Nick Annunziata (Neshanic Station, NJ/St. Joseph) brought home the go-ahead run.

Niech then singled home Weinstein in the bottom of the eighth to knot things at 7-7.

In the top of the ninth, the Engineers scored seven times on six hits, including a bases clearing double by junior Nick Palmiero (Patterson, NY/Carmel), which made it 13-7. Annunziata added a base hit to left to cap the scoring in the frame.

Sophomore righthander Stephen Schiavone (White Plains, NY/White Plains) worked around a two-out double in the bottom half of the ninth to earn his second win of the spring. He went 1.2 innings, allowing two hits, while striking out three. Nicholas D'Errico (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) was tagged with the loss, surrendering three runs on three hits in 1.0 inning of relief.

The Engineers return to the diamond tomorrow at 11am, when they face Rhode Island College.
