LAKE MYRTLE, Fla. – Junior
Jared Jensen delivered a walk-off single in the season opener, as the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team went on to sweet the University of Pittsburgh-Greenburg, in a doubleheader this afternoon. With the win, the Engineers open the season at 2-0, while the Bobcats are 0-2.
Pitt-Greensburg got the scoring started in game one, plating a run on an infield single by Matt Germanoski (Ellwood City, PA/Ellwood City) in the first, before a wild pitch allowed Dylin Brooks (Ardara, PA/Norwin) to come home in the second.
Jensen (Kingston, NY/Kingston) brought the Engineers even (2-2) in the bottom of the sixth, driving home senior
Al Mersman (Newark, DE/Salesianum) and junior
Shane Matthews (Ballston Spa, NY/Saratoga Catholic) with a triple down the line in right.
The Bobcats recaptured the lead at 3-2 in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Anthony Bozzuto (Greensburg, PA/Hempfield), but Rensselaer had the answer once again in the bottom half.
Junior
Tim LeSuer (Oak View, CA/Nordhoff) drew RPI even with a single that brought home classmate
Tyler Listing (West Sand Lake, NY/Averill Park). Jensen they came through with the walk-off base hit to give the Engineers a 4-3 win.
Freshman
Adam Aponte (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh) earned his first collegiate victory, despite allowing two runs on three hits in 2.0 innings. Senior
Sean Conroy (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) took the no decision, surrendering two runs on three hits in 5.0 innings. He struck out six, while walking four.
Game two saw the Engineers jump out to a 7-0 lead after just a half inning of play. Three bases loaded walks opened the frame, before a two-run double off the bat of junior
Nick Palmiero (Patterson, NY/Carmel) made it 5-0. Listing drove in a run while hitting into a fielder's choice, with another run scoring on the play thanks to a Bobcats error.
Bozzuto got Pitt-Greensburg on the board in the third with a solid single to right, which plated John Buerkle (Jacksonville, FL/Fletcher).
Rensselaer tacked on three more runs in the fifth, highlighted by another run-scoring hit from Palmiero. The Engineers then put together a seven-run sixth to cap the scoring in the contest. Freshman
Thomas Desmond (Alamo, CA/De LaSalle) and sophomore Mike Croke (South Hadley, MA/South Hadley) each recorded two-run singles during the outburst.
Sophomore righthander
Stephen Schiavone (White Plains, NY/White Plains) picked the up his first collegiate victory, allowing two unearned runs on four hits in 5.0 innings. He struck out three and walked two. Classmate
Greg Echeverria (Longmeadow, MA/Longmeadow) threw the final 2.0 innings, striking out six, including four in the bottom of the seventh.
The Engineers are back on the diamond tomorrow morning, when they face Husson University (10am).
