WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Senior
Andrew Kalish and junior
Nick Palmiero went a combined 7 for 7 to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team to a, 6-5, victory over Husson University, this morning in non-league action. With the win, the Engineers improve to 3-0, while the Eagles drop to 0-1.
Rensselaer jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a single to right by junior
Tim LeSuer (Oak View, CA/Nordhoff), which brought home classmate
Tyler Listing (West Sand Lake, NY/Averill Park).
Husson took a brief lead in the bottom of the frame, scoring on a single by senior Dylan Foster (Oakland, ME/Messalonkee) and a ground ball from junior Kyle Bishop (Waterville, ME/Waterville) that was misplayed by Palmiero (Patterson, NY/Carmel) at short.
The Engineers quickly regained the lead scoring twice in the second and twice in the third, for a 5-1 advantage. Palmiero atoned for his earlier miscue, with a run-scoring single, which was followed by an RBI-base hit to left by Kalish (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa). Sophomore
Nick Annunziata (Neshanic Station, NJ/St. Joseph) followed with a groundout that plated junior
Shane Matthews (Ballston Spa, NY/Saratoga Catholic).
Senior Cody McInnis (Bangor, ME/Bangor) started Husson's comeback in the sixth, driving home freshman Dennis Meehan (Gardiner, ME/Gardiner Area) with a single to left. Bishop then drove in a run while reaching on an error in the seventh. Meehan tied the game at 5-5 with a sacrifice fly later in the inning.
In the top of the ninth, Palmiero broke the tie, lifting a sac fly to left, which brought home classmate
Jared Jensen (Kingston, NY/Kingston) from third.
Freshman righthander
Jack Krasovec (Haverhill, MA/St. Johns Prep) shut the door in the ninth, setting down the Eagles in order to claim his first collegiate victory. He allowed two runs on three hits in 3.1 innings of relief. Starter
Tim Gallagher (Snohomish, WA) gave up three runs (2 earned) on seven hits in 5.2 innings.
Husson saw starter Brandon Reilly (Pemaquaid, ME/Lincoln Academy) go 5.0 innings, surrendering five runs on 10 hits. Sophomore Dan Whitney (Bethel, ME/Telstar Regional) suffered the tough luck loss, allowing just one run on seven hits in 3.1 innings.
The Engineers are back in action tomorrow afternoon, when they face SUNY Cortland in Lake Myrtle, Fla. (1pm).
