Baseball Tops Williams, 3-1

Sean Conroy leads Engineers to non-league victory

TROY, N.Y. – Senior righthander Sean Conroy allowed just one run in 8.0 innings, to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team to a, 3-1, victory over Williams College, this afternoon, in non-league play from Robison Field. With the win, the Engineers improve to 16-10 overall, while the Ephs drop to 7-11.
 
The visitors struck first in the top of the first inning, when senior catcher Marco Hernandez (Fort Worth, TX/Fort Worth Nolan) drove home senior Matt Kastner (Mendham, NJ/Delbarton) with a groundout to third.
 
After two scoreless innings, the Engineers plated a pair of runs in the fourth, to take a 2-1 lead. Junior Jared Jensen (Kingston, NY/Kingston) ripped a hard single to center to tie the game (1-1), before senior Shane Matthews (Ballston Spa, NY/Saratoga Catholic) walked to bring home the eventual game-winning run.
 
RPI added an insurance run in the fifth on an RBI-single off the bat of freshman Matt Lawrence (Chicago, IL/University of Chicago High School), which drove home junior Tyler Listing (West Sand Lake, NY/Averill Park) from second.
 
Conroy (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) went 8.0 solid innings, allowing just one run on four hits. He struck out seven and walked two to improve to 4-1. Williams freshman righty Luke Rodino (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) was tagged with the loss, surrendering three runs (2 earned) on six hits in 4.2 innings. He had two strikeout and two walks.
 
Junior Tim LeSuer (Oak View, CA/Nordhoff) and sophomore Nick Annunziata (Neshanic Station, NJ/ST. Joseph) both went 3 for 4 at the plate to pace the Engineers offensively. Kastner went 2 for 4 with a run scored for the Ephs.
 
The Engineers return to the diamond on Tuesday, when they travel to Williams for a non-league game (4pm). Williams face Bowdoin for a NESCAC series over the weekend, starting on Saturday (12pm).
