Box Score 2 TROY, N.Y. – Senior righthander
Sean Conroy threw a nine-inning complete game to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team to a 10-1 win in game two of a doubleheader with the University of Rochester, this afternoon at Renwyck Field. The Engineers, who lost 14-2 in game one, move to 12-6 overall (4-4 Liberty League), while the Yellowjackets are now 8-11 (5-5 Liberty League).
Conroy (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) allowed just one unearned run on nine hits in 9.0 innings, striking out nine, while walking one. He helped the Engineers avoid a four-game series sweep by shutting down the previously red hot Yellowjackets.
For the first time on the weekend, Rensselaer struck first, as junior
Nick Palmiero (Patterson, NY/Carmel) drove in the second of two runs in the top of the first inning.
The Engineers made it 4-0 in the fourth, thanks to a two-run opposite field double by junior
Tim LeSuer (Oak View, CA/Nordhoff), which scored sophomore
Nick Annunziata (Neshanic Station, NJ/St. Joseph) and senior
Eric Kozak (New York, NY/Dalton School).
Two innings later, LeSuer struck again, driving a ball over the head of Rochester centerfielder Matt Todd (Poughkeepsie, NY/Roy C. Ketchum) for an RBI-double. Senior
Al Mersman (Newark, DE/Salesianum) followed with a run-scoring single to left to make it 6-0.
After RPI scored two more runs in the eighth, the Yellowjackets finally cracked Conroy for a run, as an Ethan Sander (Port Washington, NY/Schreiber) single through the left side of the infield brought home a run.
The Engineers answered with a two-run ninth to cap the scoring.
In game one, Rochester scored in every inning, including three in the first and two in the second. Every player in the Yellowjackets lineup recorded at least one hit and one run, including Sander, who went 3 for 4, with two runs scored and two runs batted in.
Junior Brendan Garry (Ronkonkoma, NY/Sachem North) finished 2 for 4, with two runs, two runs batted in and two walks, while Todd wound up 2 for 4, with three runs and a run batted in.
Rochester starter Michael Mondon (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) went the full 7.0 innings, allowing just two runs on six hits. He struck out four and did not walk a batter.
For RPI, freshmen
Steven Wells (Yardley, PA/The Hun School) and
Thomas Kensi (Mansfield, TX/Mansfield) each recorded their first collegiate hits, including a double off the fence by Wells and a run-scoring single off the bat of Kensi.
The Engineers are back in action on Tuesday, when they host Skidmore for a twin bill at Robison Field (2pm). Both games can be heard live on 91.5 FM, WRPI or online (
